Multilingual Learners

Multilingual Learner Services

Howell Public Schools offers Multilingual Learner (ML) services for students in grades kindergarten through twelve who need this support. ML teachers and tutors work with our students to help them learn the mechanics of speaking, reading and writing the English Language. All services take place during the school day, in addition to the child's English and math classes.

In compliance with the federal and state laws and regulations, Howell Public Schools has developed and implemented a program where Multilingual Learners (ML) and their families can meaningfully access our services and receive guidance on legal obligations. Please see the resources below.

ML Assessment

Students who qualify for ML services are administered WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment). This test measures how well a student can read, write, listen and speak English. The data helps our teachers, tutors, administrators, and parents track a student's growth in English skills. Students are given the WIDA before ML services begin and then take it annually in April. Parents are sent a report of the assessment results, with our teachers and ML tutors maintaining continuous communications with parents throughout the year.
