To say that Howell High takes music just about everywhere people will listen is no exaggeration. Howell High School has three concert bands as well as a marching band, jazz band, and percussion ensemble. Students can choose among five different choirs to fit their interests.
Concert Band
The concert band is for student musicians who play the following instruments: oboe, flute, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, and percussion. Students perform in 5-6 after-school concerts throughout the year, we well as the MSBOA B&O festival in March, registering as a Class D Senior High School Band.
Any students with previous band experience and/or instructor permission may join the concert band. This class is available to grades 9-12 but is recommended for grades 9-11.
Symphonic Band
Students play the same instruments as in Concert Band, but the curriculum covers more advanced musical concepts and compositions. Symphonic Band registers as an MSBOA Class B Senior HS Band. Entry into this band is by audition and/or instructor permission only. Students should have several years of middle school and some high school band experience before they take this class. Most students are in grades 10–12, but students in grade 9 can also audition.
Wind Ensemble
This is the most advanced concert ensemble.
Jazz Band
This is the most advanced concert ensemble.
Marching Band
Howell High’s 180+ member marching band performs at sporting events and a wide range of community events, including holiday parades.
Percussion Ensemble
Students build upon their current knowledge of percussion through participation in rehearsals and performances. Students will work with traditional keyboards, rudimental drumming, hand drums, drum set, orchestral percussion, and other instruments. This is not just a drumset class.
Choir
