Howell Public Schools engages in a regular curriculum review cycle for the major core subject areas:
- English Language Arts
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- World Language
The HPS Curriculum Cycle follows a traditional process that defines the requirements of the curriculum in the beginning, and then uses those requirements to drive every subsequent step. Everything flows downhill, like a waterfall, from the requirements defined in the beginning.
The HPS curriculum cycle phases are:
- Design
- Pilot
- Implementation / Investment
- Assessment
- Evaluation
Within that traditional framework, for the Design and Pilot phases, Howell uses a non-traditional methodology called Design Thinking. It is focused on understanding the needs of students, building collaboration, and encouraging flexible responses to change.
Over the past 7 years, Howell Public Schools has committed approximately $1.4 million in the curriculum implementation phase for ELA (Elementary, Middle, High), Math (Middle, High), Science (Elementary, Middle, High), and Social Studies (Middle, High).
For the 2023-24 school year, the following areas are in the implementation phase:
- Elementary Science (part 1)
- Middle and High School ELA
- High School Social Studies
