School Closings & Notifications

Several factors guide our decision whether or not to close school. First and foremost is the safety of students and staff.

We make every effort to cancel school no later than 5:30 am to give families as much time as possible to make arrangements for the day. Once the decision has been made to cancel school, we notify parents by phone and email using our parent notification system.

School closings are posted on the district's website, Facebook page and Twitter account (@HowellMISchools). Closings are also announced on WHMI 93.5, WJBK Fox 2, WDIV Local 4, WLNS Channel 6, WILX Channel 10, and WXYZ Channel 7.

Road conditions. When snow or ice falls overnight or in the early morning, members of our transportation team drive the roads to determine whether the roads are safe. While the transportation staff is checking road conditions, conference calls between the superintendents in Livingston County discuss current and forecasted road and weather conditions.

Our district covers 167 square miles on both paved and dirt roads. Often the main roads may be clear, but the back roads and subdivision roads are not. Due to varied conditions throughout Livingston County, some schools close while Howell Schools do not.

Cold weather. We will cancel school if the sustained air temperature with wind chill is expected to be at or below –20℉ when a student is waiting for a bus or walking to school.

Power outages. Other factors that can lead to school cancellation include power outages and problems in school buildings or facilities.
