Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Michigan law now requires all K–12 schools to use standardized emergency response terminology. This statewide approach helps ensure that students, staff, first responders, and families share the same language during an emergency, reducing confusion and enabling everyone to respond more quickly and appropriately.

Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, Howell Public Schools will use the “I Love U Guys” Standard Response Protocol (SRP) as part of this statewide requirement. The SRP provides a consistent set of five emergency actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter, each with a specific purpose and a clear, expected response.

One item to note is that the district will also use the term Medical Hold to indicate when students are being held in their classrooms because of a medical situation occurring in the building. A Medical Hold allows school staff to protect an individual’s privacy while also allowing first responders to quickly access the building to provide care.

Although the terminology is changing, our commitment to school safety is not. Howell Public Schools will continue to follow established emergency procedures designed to protect students and staff. The district remains dedicated to providing a safe, secure learning environment for every student and staff member while communicating clearly and transparently with families during emergency situations.
