Howell High School Air Force Junior ROTC Takes First Place at State Drill Meet

1/28/2025 - Competing against 21 Junior ROTC (JROTC) programs from across the state, Howell High School's Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) unit claimed first place at the Statewide Drill Meet held last month at Cass Tech High School in Detroit. A total of 24 Howell cadets participated in the competition. The JV Unarmed team secured second place, the Varsity Armed Squad claimed first place, and the Varsity Armed Platoon earned second place. The Inspection Team demonstrated their precision with a fourth-place finish, while the Varsity Color Guard showcased their skills, earning second place. With overall points calculated based on event standings, Howell's AFJROTC unit outperformed the competition by 10 points to take the top honor.
In addition to the team's outstanding performance, several individual cadets earned honors. Cadet 1st Lieutenant Holly Miller achieved second place in the 2nd-4th Year Knockout category, while Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Addison Wonnacott and Cadet Staff Sergeant Kasey Vickerman earned ninth and tenth places, respectively, in the same category. In the 1st Year Knockout category, Cadet Airman Lily Malewicz secured third place, and Cadet Airman Derek Donahee placed sixth.
"The cadets all came together so that we could peak at the right time," said Senior Master Sergeant Reinhart, Howell High School aerospace science instructor.
Air Force Junior ROTC's mission is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community while instilling values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
