Do It For Daniel Mental Wellness Program

Posted on 09/09/2022
Do It For Daniel 9/9/2022 - September is Suicide Awareness Month. To raise awareness of this important topic, Howell Public Schools will host Mr. Jeff Olsen from Sept. 19-21. Olsen is the father of Daniel Olsen, who was an Ishpeming High School all-state athlete who died by suicide in 2012 after battling anxiety and depression for years. Since his death, Daniel’s family has been open about Daniel’s mental health struggles and has been working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness through the “Do It For Daniel” program.

While in Howell, Olsen will host a family and community presentation that will include a viewing of the documentary “Do It For Daniel” and lead a discussion around mental health. The presentation will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Howell High School Rod Bushey Performing Arts Center. The presentation is free and open to all in Howell and Livingston County. Olsen will also present to students at Howell High School and Innovation Academy as part of his visit.

“Mental health is a critical topic that we must discuss. Mr. Olsen and his family have used their tragic loss to increase awareness of and end the stigma around mental illness,” said Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S, Howell Public Schools superintendent. “I hope everyone will consider attending the family and community night with Mr. Olsen.
