While school meals are free under waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), several benefits to the district and qualifying families are available only if free or reduced-price meal applications are completed by families.

This year, Howell Public Schools will receive approximately $1.9 million of federal and state funding based on the percentage of its families that qualified for free and reduced-price school meals last year. This helps fund reading tutors, counselors, classroom support staff, and summer reading programs that benefit all students.

Families who qualify for free and reduced-price school meals may also receive discounts on college application fees, reduced costs when taking the SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placements exams, and discounts on their home internet costs. Additionally, should the government extend the Pandemic EBT program, families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may be eligible for supplemental food assistance benefits.
