MacGregor's Message 12/14/18

Dear Families,

Last week, we honored our Laura Williams, Challenger Elementary building secretary as the 2018-2019 Support Person of the Year and Cindy Blackmar, Northwest Elementary paraprofessional as the 2018-2019 Service Person of the Year. Both Laura and Cindy are incredibly dedicated and do whatever is needed to support our students. They genuinely care about our students, staff, and families, and I am grateful to have them on the Howell team. Please join me in congratulating both Laura and Cindy on their awards. On Monday night, the Board of Education recognized Nancy Gregory, our high school gymnastics coach, for being named the 2018 Michigan High School Coaches Association Gymnastics Coach of the Year. Coach Gregory has been involved in coaching our gymnastics program for 26 years. In that time, she has helped shape the future of hundreds of students as she taught them not only the sport of gymnastics but also the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Under Coach Gregory, our gymnasts are among the best in the state and have consistently qualified to compete at the state championship.

One of our business partners, LOC Federal Credit Union, was recently named the second-place winner of the National Desjardins Youth Award by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) for its asset category. The award honors the work of the credit union to promote youth and adult financial literacy. Through our partnership with LOC Federal Credit Union, seven of our schools have student-run credit union branches, teaching financial literacy and real-world work skills. LOC Federal Credit Union has also partnered with our middle schools and high school to host Teen Financial Reality Fairs which help students learn about the importance of budgeting, planning, and saving. Recently, students in our Kids Kare and early childhood preschool programs took part in a pajama drive. This weekend, three of our FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams are competing at the FIRST in Michigan FTC State Championship. Our district-wide canned drive exceeded its goal of 30,000 items collected for Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Next week is a shortened week as we head into our holiday break, which begins on Thursday, December 20. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2019. I hope you all have an enjoyable break and holiday with your family and friends.

Howell Kids Kare and Preschool Support Pajama Program

Students in our preschool and Kids Kare programs recently supported the Livingston County Department of Human Services pajama program. The pajama program is a not-for-profit organization that collects new pajamas and books for children in the county waiting to be adopted. The students gathered 125 pairs of pajamas and 82 books to support this wonderful program.

Annual District-Wide Canned Food Drive a Success
The annual district-wide canned food drive supporting Gleaners  Community Food Bank was once again a huge success. As a district, we collected more than 40,000 canned goods that will help families in need here in Livingston County. This exceeded the goal set by the Howell High School leadership classes who planned the canned food drive by more than 10,000 cans.
