MacGregor's Message 11/30/18

Dear Families,

Just before our Thanksgiving Break, students at Parker Middle School participated in the Fleece and Thank You program. During an extended Patriot Time, students created 187 colorful blankets and made videos that will be sent to children facing extended hospital stays. This project fits into the school’s work with the Positivity Project and its motto #OtherPeopleMatter.

On Tuesday, December 4 at 6 p.m., Howell High School will host a parent workshop focusing on teen depression, suicide, and other mental health conditions. More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention for Parents was developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and will help parents learn how to recognize the signs of depression and other mental health conditions, initiate a conversation with their child about the topic, and how to get help if needed. The program is geared towards middle and high school parents; however, all are welcome. I know that is can be a hard topic to discuss, but I hope you will consider attending. Next Friday, December 7, we will have our second half day of the school year. On that day, our high school students will be released at 10:50 a.m., middle school students at 10:51 a.m., and elementary students at 12:05 p.m. The half-day elementary school afternoon bus routes can be found at https://goo.gl/Z7w74Z. After students are released, our staff will be taking part in various professional development sessions to help further our academic, social and emotional support for students.

The Howell Public Schools canned food drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank is in full swing. With one week left in the drive, we are more nearing the goal of collecting 30,000 canned goods. Donations can be made at each Howell school building or online at https://goo.gl/riNbmD.

Recently, two Howell High School students excelled in a county-wide marketing competition and students at Three Fires Elementary learned about Red-tailed Hawks. Students at Innovation Academy have been having fun while learning and creating in the school’s MakerSpace. You can read more on each of these stories below.

HHS Students Take First Place at Entrepreneurship Competition
Howell High School seniors Alec Pominville and Daniel Zeppa recently claimed first place at the Livingston County Entrepreneurship Competition and Career Fair. The competition was based on the popular show Shark Tank where aspiring entrepreneurs pitch a business idea to a panel of judges in the hope of earning funding. The competition was open to all Livingston County High School students. Alec and Daniel impressed the judges with their idea for a mobile barber shop and won $450 in prize money. Three Fires Students Learn About Red-tailed Hawks
Recently, second-grade students at Three Fires Elementary learned about Red-tailed Hawks from the Howell Nature Center. The Nature Center rescued a Red-tailed Hawk that had been injured near the school and invited the students to witness its release back into the wild. Before releasing the bird, nature center staff members shared facts about Red-tailed Hawks and how they had rehabilitated the bird. You can watch a video of the release at https://goo.gl/m1xuKo.

Innovation Academy Students Get Creative in MakerSpace
Students at Innovation Academy have been busy working on various projects in the school’s MakerSpace. A MakerSpace is a collaborative workspace where students learn by creating and exploring with various tools, technology, and materials. The students have created everything from pallet art to a working computer numerical controlled router.
