MacGregor's Message 9/29/2023

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the first quarter of the school year. The year is flying by with so many exciting things happening in our district and schools.

In this edition of MacGregor’s Message

  • National Principals Month
  • Our Kids, Our Community, Our Future Bond Proposal
  • Coffee Chat
  • Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
  • National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students
  • Co-Curricular Achievements

October is National Principals Month. It is a tribute to the pivotal role principals play in leading our schools and shaping the future of our nation’s students. We are so fortunate to have what I consider the best administrative team in the state, working with our staff, students, and families. Their dedication is endless and extends well beyond the walls of our schools. They work tirelessly to support all students and create a warm and welcoming environment in our schools. Please join me in thanking our principals for all their hard work.

The Our Kids, Our Community, Our Future Bond Proposal focuses on five key areas: Safety and Security, Learning Environments, Teaching Tools, Aging Building Infrastructure, and Community Needs. If approved, the bond proposal would make significant improvements to each of our buildings in these five areas. Please watch the video below to learn more about how the bond would impact our learning environments if approved. To learn more about the overall bond proposal, please visit HowellSchools.com/Bond. Please share this website with your friends and neighbors who reside in the district, but may not have students in school. Lastly, please remember to vote on Tuesday, November 7.

I will host my first Coffee Chat of the school year on Tuesday, October 10, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Black Iron Coffee Roasters in Downtown Howell. During the event, I will share information on the Our Kids, Our Community, Our Future Bond Proposal, and overall district updates. There will also be time for questions about the bond proposal or general questions about the district. I hope to see you there.

If you have a freshman, your child should have received an email from me this week regarding my Student Advisory Council. The email invited students to apply to be part of the council. The purpose of the group is to 1) be informed about and advise me on issues facing the district, 2) serve as a liaison to students in the district, 3) work with regional leaders to advance the interests of the overall community, and 4) serve the district and the community. For more information on the council, please click here. The council will meet approximately once a month during the school day (Flex Period). Please talk with your child about this opportunity and encourage them to apply. The link to apply to join the council was in the email they received.

Last week, we learned that two additional Howell High School students have earned honors in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Jack Johnston and Sarah Ketchum are Commended Students in this year’s competition. Jack and Sarah placed in the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.3 million students who entered the 2024 competition, placing them in the top three percent of all students who entered the competition. We have had some outstanding co-curricular achievements in the past few weeks. Last weekend, the Howell High School Equestrian Team claimed the Division 1 Class C District Championship. The team is competing this weekend at their Regional Event. Over Labor Day weekend, seniors Alex Herter and Jakob Stamper, members of the Howell High School Bass Nation Fishing Club, competed in the Michigan Bass Nation High School State Tournament. Alex and Jakob competed against nearly 50 high school teams and walked away with first place in the tournament and the award for biggest bass.

Have a great weekend, and Go Highlanders!

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
