Next weekend, the Howell High School Performing Arts Department will present its fall play "Radium Girls." On Friday, November 4, and Saturday, November 5, performances will be at 7 p.m. On Sunday, November 6, the performance will be at 2 p.m. "Radium Girls" is the true story of three women, Grace Fryer (Olivia Dechy), Irene Rudolph (Kaiyah Luethy), and Kathryn Schaub (Haley Matta), who paint watch dials in the U.S. Radium Company Plant. The women are instructed to finely point their brushes by molding the bristles with their mouths while painting, causing them to ingest the paint. As the women who work at the plant begin to get sick, Grace fights for justice for herself and her former co-workers in the courts. Next Tuesday, November 1, is our first district-wide late start day. On this day, our secondary students will begin at 9:05 a.m., and elementary students will start at 10:20 a.m. Transportation will be provided, and approximate bus stop times can be found at https://bit.ly/3DDrgym. The goal of the late start days is to allow our staff more frequent professional development opportunities so they will be better equipped to serve our students.
Last month we hosted Mr. Jeff Olsen from the Do It For Daniel program. Jeff is the father of Daniel Olsen, an Ishpeming High School all-state athlete who died by suicide in 2012 after battling anxiety and depression for years. Since his death, Daniel's family has been open about Daniel's mental health struggles and has been working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. While in Howell, Jeff allowed us to record his community presentation, which included viewing the documentary Do It For Daniel. The Arc Livingston, a community group that supports people with developmental disabilities in Livingston County, hosts a monthly program called Sibshop. The Sibshop program is an opportunity for siblings (ages 8-12) of children with disabilities or special medical needs to get together, discuss the joys and challenges of having a sibling with special needs, play games, and develop relationships with one another.
