District Updates: Monday, June 21, 2021

Dear Families,

I hope your summer is off to a great start. We have had two great weeks of Camp Highlander, our reading camp for students in grades kindergarten through second. We have also started several projects funded by the 2019 Capital Needs and Safety Bond. We are also working hard to plan for the 2021-2022 school year. While we have a lot of work ahead of us these next couple of months, we are planning for a much more “normal” school year. If you missed it in the last MacGregor’s Message, we did release the 2021-2022 school year calendar, which can be found at https://bit.ly/3wm9lWw.

Throughout the summer, we will have the Highlander Reading Express out in various locations around our community. This year, instead of checking out books when they visit, we will be allowing children to select a new book to add to their home library. Our first stop will be tomorrow, Tuesday, June 22, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with our friends from the Summer Lunch Bunch at the Brighton Village Manufactured Home Community. Keep an eye on our Facebook page, Twitter, and the district website for locations and times.

As you may have heard, the Board of Education voted to table a curriculum change adoption last Monday evening after hearing concerns from parents. The proposed change is for the district’s high school health course and related to mental health topics including mental health disorders, depression, anxiety, suicide prevention, the impact of technology on mental health, cyberbullying, and the increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide for students identifying as LGBTQ+. To learn more about this proposed curriculum change adoption, please visit https://bit.ly/35E5wRl. District staff will be sharing more information on this proposal at the June 28 Board Meeting. The Board of Education will not take action on this proposal at this meeting.

As I mentioned above, we have started several bond projects across the district. Some of the larger projects this summer include parking lot paving and resurfacing, the replacements of several roofs, and mechanical updates. Each week, our construction team will be providing an update on the status of the various projects. The updates will be posted each Friday at HowellSchools.com/Bond.

If you have not already done so, please take a few minutes to complete our School Perception Survey at https://bit.ly/3vZkR9W. The feedback from this survey will help us identify our areas of strength and areas for improvement. The survey will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 25.

Sincerely,

Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
