MacGregor's Message 3/5/21
Dear Families,

We continue to work toward the reopening of the Highlander Aquatic and Fitness Center. Many of the required maintenance projects have been completed, and we are making progress on hiring instructors, lifeguards, and front desk staff. There are still open positions available, which can be found at HowellSchools.com/jobs. We believe that we will be ready to reopen with a limited schedule by the end of the month. The reopening will be done in phases, with lap swimming and open swim starting first, followed by the addition of various classes. This is being done to allow staff and patrons to become accustomed to the various COVID-19 safety protocols that are being implemented to ensure the safety of our patrons and staff. You can follow the reopening progress at HowellSchools.com/aquatics.

Next Wednesday, March 10, each of our elementary schools will host a virtual meet and greet for our incoming begindergarten and kindergarten families. Families who have already completed the registration process will receive an email on Monday with the meeting link for their school's meet and greet. The links are also posted online at HowellSchools.com/kdg. If you have an incoming begindergarten or kindergarten student but have not yet registered them, please visit HowellSchools.com/kdg to begin the registration process. This year, all registrations are being completed online.

Recently, one of our Highlander Virtual students received a nice recognition from Jet's Pizza. The students in Ms. Swansey's third-grade class have been learning about Michigan's economy. For an assignment, students learned about specialization and how it affects Michigan. One of their assignments in this unit was to create a commercial for a Michigan-made product. One student, James, created a commercial for Jet's Pizza. After the commercial was shared by a family member on social media, Jet's Pizza reached out and sent James a letter of recognition and Jet's Pizza swag. You can view James' commercial at http://bit.ly/3bfGCLf.

The Howell High School Performing Arts Department will present "The Dining Room" March 18-21. The play is made up of short, interconnected scenes that create a picture of the families that share the dining room over the years. Producing a live production during this time is no small undertaking, and students and the production team have been working under strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of the cast, crew, and patrons. Seating for the performances will be limited. To learn more about the production and how you can purchase tickets, please visit https://bit.ly/2MJEjGO.

This week, many school districts around the state welcomed students back into their school buildings for the first time since March 13 of last year. This happened as we prepare to end our third quarter of in-person and virtual learning next week. I know I have said this many times before, but it still bears repeating, the incredible things we have accomplished this school year would not have been possible without the support of each Howell Public Schools employee and every Howell Public Schools family. We have overcome challenges, adapted to new procedures, and worked together to make this school year successful. Of course, we must always remain vigilant with our COVID-19 safety measures and follow best public health practices such as staying home when sick or when COVID-19 test results are pending, avoiding large and indoor social gatherings, wearing a mask in public, and practicing frequent hand washing.

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
Superintendent
