MacGregor's Message 9/25/20
Dear Families,

Next week is Homecoming Week at Howell Public Schools. To celebrate, our student leaders at Howell High School have planned a district-wide spirit week. To view the spirit days, please visit https://bit.ly/344PGhs. Unfortunately, many of the other traditional homecoming activities will not be held this year due to COVID-19. In following Governor Whitmer’s Executive Orders and Michigan High School Athletic Association guidance, attendance at the Homecoming Football Game will be limited to two spectators per participant, and the hill area around Memorial Stadium will be closed.

This week it was announced that Legislative leaders and Governor Whitmer had reached an agreement on the state budget. As it stands now, the budget will maintain our state funding at last year’s levels, which is excellent news considering that earlier projections showed school districts facing a significant reduction in state funding. We will continue to monitor the state’s budget process and provide any updates as they are available.

The majority of our summer bond projects are wrapping up, and we are planning for the projects that will be completed next summer. Additionally, please remember that under several waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, we can provide free meals to all students. I have shared more on both of these items below.

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
Superintendent
Howell Public School

Summer Bond Project Update
The majority of our summer bond projects have been completed or are in their final stages. Our maintenance department is currently working through a “punch list” to ensure that all work is completed to our satisfaction. Work on a few of these projects like the construction of new restrooms, press boxes, and concession stands at the high school’s baseball and softball complex (pictured on the left) will continue throughout the fall in order for these facilities to be ready for the spring. We are now actively planning for the projects that will be completed next summer. Many of these projects will be less visible to the general public as they include roof replacements, upgrades to various heating and cooling systems, water heaters, and pavement work.

Free Meals for Kids
Under a series of waivers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), all children under 18 will receive free school meals until December 31, 2020, or until funding for the program runs out. This means that all students purchasing a full breakfast or lunch at school will not be charged. Additionally, under the waivers, we can provide meal kits that contain seven days of breakfast and lunch items to families with children under the age of 18. Distribution of the kits will take place each Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the circle drive on the northside of Howell High School, and each Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the bus lot off Latson Road at Three Fires Elementary. If you have any questions about this program, please contact the Food Service Department at 517.540.8347.
