MacGregor's Message 10/25/19

Dear Families,

We are finishing up the work on the replacement of the Howell High School field house boiler, which is the first major project funded by the 2019 Capital and Safety Bond. The boiler that we replaced was over 40 years old and well past its life expectancy. We replaced the old boiler with two energy-efficient boiler units, which will provide a cost savings to the district as they will require less energy to run. To share the details of this project, we created a short video, which can be viewed at http://bit.ly/2MKPe0d

On Monday, October 28, at 5:30 p.m., we will be activating the SMS text messaging feature on our parent notification system. At that time, an opt-in message will be sent to cell phone numbers that we have on file, and that have not already opted-in to receive messages. The message will give you the option to opt-in or opt-out of receiving SMS messages. For those who have already texted “Y” to 67587 to opt-in, you will not receive this message. On Thursday, October 31, at 5 p.m., we plan to send our first SMS text message to everyone who has opted-in to receive these messages. If you opted-in but do not receive the message on October 31, we may not have the correct cell phone number on file. In this case, please contact your child’s school to double-check that we have the correct cell phone number in our records.

Last week, someone shared a news article with me regarding the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) prediction for this winter’s weather. NOAA’s forecast covered the winter months, but it did make me think about the fact that last year, our first inclement weather day occurred in late November. Hopefully, it will be a while before we hear the words snow and freezing temperatures in the daily forecast, but to be sure that we are ready, please take a few moments to review our Winter Weather School Closing Process at http://bit.ly/2MF3iZ4. This provides the general process we will follow when there is the possibility that inclement weather will require us to consider closing school.

On Wednesday, the Howell High School Air Force Junior ROTC program had its three-year evaluation. The annual Howell Public Schools district-wide canned food drive will begin Monday, October 28. Please remember that Friday, November 1, is a half-day of school. You can find more information on each of these items below.

Howell High School Air Force Junior ROTC Exceeds Standards in Inspection

On Wednesday, Howell High School’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFJROTC) program had its three-year US Air Force inspection. This triennial inspection is required to provide feedback regarding the performance of the school’s AFJROTC unit and to assess its compliance with Public Law, Department of Defense and Air Force Instructions, and the written agreement which exists between your school district and the Air Force. The high school’s program received an overall assessment ranking of “Exceeds Standards” which is the highest rating that a unit can attain.

District-wide Canned Food Drive Begins Monday, October 28

Each year students in Howell High School’s Leadership class organize a district-wide canned good and personal hygiene drive to support Gleaners Community Food Bank. This year’s drive will run from October 28 through Tuesday, November 26. The students hope to collect 50,000 items this year to support families in need that live in our community.  Donations can be dropped off at all Howell Public Schools buildings. To view a flyer on the drive, please visit http://bit.ly/2pJkd3H

November 1 is a Half Day For Students

Please remember that Friday, November 1, is a half-day of school for all students. Middle and high school students will be released at 10:50 a.m. and elementary students will be released at 12:05 p.m. All elementary students in kindergarten through third grade must be met by an adult or older sibling at the bus stop, otherwise they will be returned to their school’s Kid’s Care program and a $20 fee will be charged. Our building offices will close for the day after students are dismissed so that our office professionals can attend professional development.
