3/23/18 - Three Parker Middle School students have been named local winners in the 49th Annual America and Me Essay Contest. In the contest, Grace Fyke claimed first place, Lorien Ruth took second place and Maria Pacitto claimed third place. Each student received a certificate of achievement. Additionally, as the first place winner, Fyke will have her named engraved on a plaque for display in the school. The topic for this year’s contest was “My Personal Michigan Hero.”

As the first place winner, Fyke’s essay will be entered into the state level competition.  A team of judges comprised of a Michigan government official and the sponsoring teachers of last year’s winners will review and rank each entry. The top 10 statewide winners will receive a plaque, medallion and a cash award of $1,000. Additionally, the top 10 essay winners will be honored at a banquet in Lansing, meet with Michigan’s top governmental leaders and be featured guests at a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game.

This year, several thousand eighth grade students from more than 350 Michigan schools participated in the essay contest, which is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Started in 1968 and open to all Michigan eighth grade students, the America and Me Essay Contest encourages students to explore the rich history and America.
