HHS Named UCS National Banner School

Howell High School Named Special Olympics North America 2020 Unified Champion School National Banner School

A UCS Team Member 8/21/20 - Special Olympics North America has honored Howell High School as a 2020 Unified Champion School National Banner School. A school is eligible to be named a national banner school by meeting ten standards of excellence. According to the Special Olympics website, “A Unified Champion School receiving national banner recognition has demonstrated commitment to inclusion by meeting ten national standards of excellence. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community.” The ten national standards of excellence include having an active Unified Sports program, inclusive youth leadership, whole-school engagement, and a sustainability plan. “It is an incredible honor to be named a 2020 Unified Champion School National Banner School. This highlights our school’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where our students feel welcome and have an opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities,” said Jason Schrock, Howell High School principal. “I am so proud of our students and staff who have worked to build the Unified Champion School program at Howell High School.

“Being recognized as one of the top Unified Champion Schools in the country highlights the work our students and staff have done to build an inclusive environment for all students,” said Susie, Mitchell, Howell High School speech therapist, and Unified Champion Schools coach. “Our school and community have embraced the ideas and standards of the UCS program. The support that they have shown our student-athletes has been amazing.”

Howell High School is one of five schools in Michigan to be named a 2020 Unified Champion School National Banner School. At a later date, Special Olympics Michigan will work with the school to plan a recognition ceremony.
