To showcase their reading and writing skills students in Jana Jilek-Wolfe’s first-grade class at Hutchings Elementary held the grand opening of the Wolfe Pack Reading and Writing Restaurant. As the restaurant opened, parents and special guests were greeted by their student and shown to their seat. The menu for the day included an appetizer, main course and dessert, each of which showcased what the students have learned over the course of the school year.

For the appetizer, guests selected a book for their student to read to show the student’s reading growth. The main course included writing projects that the students shared with their guests and dessert featured a portfolio that was filled with pictures and writing from the school year.

In preparation for the grand opening of the restaurant, the students selected three books that they would read and practiced reading each one, as they did not know which book would be selected by their guests. The also created their own aprons, made centerpieces and practiced being servers.
