Students at a LOC Financial Reality Fair5/17/18 - Recently students at Highlander Way Middle School, Parker Middle School, and Howell High School received a financial reality check when they took part in Financial Reality Fairs at their schools. The Financial Reality Fairs taught the students the importance of being financially responsible and how quickly lifestyle choices can add up. At the middle schools, all eighth-grade students took part in the fairs and at the high school students in the personal finance class participates.

At the start of the fair, students received a budget worksheet with their gross monthly salary, their month’s tax breakdown, and their net monthly salary. With their budget in hand, students visited multiple stations where they made lifestyle decisions. These decisions included selecting a used or new car, eating out versus eating at home, planning a trip and selecting a cell phone. The goal was for the students to pay of their monthly expenses while being able to set aside a certain amount of savings and staying within a budget.

The fairs were presented as part of a partnership between LOC Federal Credit Union and Howell Public Schools.
