An open house planned for Saturday, June 11, will showcase the 2,000 square foot house constructed entirely by students in Howell High School’s Construction Trades program. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Over the course of 10 months the students took what was an empty lot and turned it into a three bedroom, two bathroom home with an attached garage. Each day the students worked with licensed builders, plumbers and electricians who served as mentors for the program to complete the house. The house will now be sold and the profits reinvested into the program. Last year’s house sold for more than $200,000.

Students who complete the Construction Trades program will graduate are both college and career ready. The skills that students utilize while building the house reinforce the skills they have learned in other classes such as math and technology. Through the program, students earn articulated college credits thanks to agreements with local community colleges. Each year several students go on to pursue a degree in construction management. While many students go on to continue their education others enter the workforce after completing the program. For the last several years the program has had a 100 percent job placement rate for students. Regardless of the career path, a student chooses, the lessons and experiences that they gain from the Construction Trades program are invaluable, as the students will have the knowledge to complete many household repairs without needing to call in a contractor.

This year’s student built home is located at 3528 Warner Rd, Howell.
