Recently students in Jana Jilek-Wolfe’s first grade class at Hutchings Elementary held the grand opening of the Wolfepack Reading and Writing Restaurant. As the restaurant opened, parents and special guests were greeted by their student and shown to their table. The menu for the day consisted of an appetizer, main course and dessert, each of which showcased what the students have learned over the course of the school year.

For the appetizer, guests were asked to choose from a selection of three books. Students then read the book to their guests to show their reading growth. Next up was the main course, which included to writing projects that the students shared with their guests. For dessert, each student shared their portfolios that were filled with pictures and writing from the school year.

In preparation for the grand opening, students selected three books that they would read and practiced reading each one, as they did not know which book would be selected by their guests. The also created their own aprons, made centerpieces and practiced being servers.
