NHS Membership Requirements

Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the highest honors a high school student may receive. NHS membership is more than an honor; it carries with it a responsibility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation, not merely the successful culmination of an effort to achieve recognition. Students who are members of NHS demonstrate outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Through membership, these qualities will be reinforced. In our extremely active chapter at Howell, there are many opportunities to meaningfully contribute to the school and surrounding community.

The Howell chapter of the National Honor Society requires students to be active and involved as members. All NHS members have busy schedules with classes, extra-curricular activities and jobs. NHS is an organization of students willing to serve their school and local community beyond their busy schedule. In order to maintain membership in the Howell National Honor Society Chapter, members need to meet the expectations and requirements of the chapter. Members are expected to be hard working, dependable, honest, prompt and enthusiastic about contributing to their school and community. Each member's presence and participation are expected and essential to the success of the organization. Below is the list of mandatory requirements that are expected at present.

Mandatory Requirements of NHS
o Complete 15 hours of community service per semester
o Attend 3 events (events are community service opportunities the officers announce)
o Participate in the chapter project each semester
o Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5
o Attend at least one meeting a month
o Represent NHS by following school rules and policies
o Follow through on commitments and meet deadlines
o Be an active NHS member

Members who do not meet these requirements or performance levels may be subject to a review meeting with the NHS officers and advisers. The member will be put on probation, or dismissed from the chapter.

Students who fulfill their obligations of membership throughout their high school career will receive recognition in various ways. A National Honor Society member is recognized upon graduation with a gold NHS seal on their diploma and with recognition in the commencement program. Membership is also noted in high school records. Those students who are extremely active in the chapter can apply for scholarships as well.
