| -Kensington Lakes Middle School League: Athletic Philosophies |
|
|
| _ |
The total development of the student is the focus of a responsible athletic program. Successful programs provide for physical, mental, social, and emotional growth .
We believe that:
- The middle school age athletes are at a unique stage of development.
- Development, being able to learn from experience, making choices about future sports involvement, and having a positive learning experience are important priorities.
- Participation for as many youngsters as possible is desired.
- The program emphasis should be directed toward skill mastery, team concepts, cooperation with peers, and the fun of involvement and fair play.
- Athletics are an extension of the classroom.
The learning outcomes we seek for our athletes:
- The development of Confidence and Poise.
- Game Concepts.
- Learning from Winning or Losing .
- Total Effort.
- Friendships.
- Positive Behavior
- Sportsmanship.
...is the most important in forming positive attitudes about sportsmanship to students, spectators, and the community.
A coach should always strive to:
- Live the KLMSL philosophy and follow the Liv-Oak rules.
- Set a positive example for athletes, fans and the community.
- Abide by the rules of the game in letter and spirit.
- Teach good sportsmanship to athletes and parents, and reward those who abide by the coach's high standards.
- Treat opposing players and coaches with respect.
- Respect the officials; understand that their contribution to athletics is an admirable one.
- Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
- Exemplify the highest moral character, behavior, and leadership
The spectators at an athletic contest have an extremely important role in displaying good sportsmanship.
Fans should always:
- Compliment student athletes in their attempts to improve and learn.
- Realize that admission to observe the contest is a privilege, not a
license to verbally assault others or be (generally) obnoxious.
- Respect both players and fans of opposing teams.
- Know and understand the rules of the game.
- Respect the decisions of officials, and admire their willingness to publicly officiate student athletes, in the best interests of inter- scholastic sports.
- Cheer good performances, regardless of uniform color.
- Recognize and compliment the efforts of coaches, officials, and league and school administrators for their interest in expanding education.
An athlete is respected and admired by the student body, the spectators, and the community. It is a role filled with responsibility.
Athletes should always:
- Follow the KLMSL philosophy and rules.
- Live up to the standards of sportsmanship established by the league.
- Learn the rules of the game and discuss them with parents, fans, and students of all ages, so all can have a better appreciation of the game.
- Remember that you are representing yourself, your school, family, and community.
- Respect your opponents. Who better than you understands the hard work that is put into sports and team effort?
- Respect the integrity and judgment of officials.
- Display positive actions in public at all times.
