4/19/18 - The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) has named Jason Schrock, Howell High School principal as the 2018 Michigan High School Principal of the Year. In addition to earning the statewide honor, Schrock has also been chosen to be the Michigan nominee for National Principal of the Year competition through the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  Members of Schrock’s family and district administrators were present when he was surprised with the award during a staff meeting on Tuesday, April 17.

Schrock received nearly 30 letters of support for the Principal of the Year nomination. Among those letters were multiple ones from members of the Howell student body describing the character, integrity, and influence of Schrock. The nomination packet described a true instructional leader, a man who works to empower teachers to be facilitators, leaders, and coaches, while also creating a student-centered learning environment where all stakeholders feel empowered to take ownership of their education. This philosophy is what drives Schrock to make Howell High School an exemplary learning community that maximizes every student's success, as well as a positive school climate that is inviting and safe for all.

“Mr. Schrock is incredibly deserving of this honor. He is a dedicated individual and leader who always has the best interest of the school community in mind,” said Erin MacGregor, Howell Public Schools superintendent. “He works tirelessly to ensure that every student feels valued, has a voice and has the resources needed to reach their full potential.”

"As education requirements and expectations continue to evolve, so does the role of a building leader," said

Wendy Zdeb, Executive Director of MASSP. "One thing that remains a constant part of the job description,

though, is the opportunity to positively impact others.”

“The most rewarding part of our jobs as educators is knowing you had a hand in shaping the minds and lives of the next generation.  As educators, we have a difficult job, but it is also an incredibly important and rewarding job,” said Schrock. “I am very honored and humbled to know that I have had enough of an impact on our students and staff to earn this award.”

Schrock will be officially honored in front of family, friends, and colleagues at MASSP's annual EdCon conference on Monday, June 25 at the Grand Traverse Resort. During the ceremony, he will receive a custom ring created and provided by Jostens to commemorate this honor.  As Michigan's nominee for National Principal of the Year, Schrock will attend the NASSP Principals Institute in Washington, DC in September and vie for the national award, which is announced during National Principals Month in October.
