Amy Kilgren11/19/19 - Highlander Way Middle School teacher Amy Kilgren has been named the 2019 Family and Consumer Science Educators of Michigan (FCSEM) Teacher of the Year. Kilgren was presented with the award at the 2019 FCSEM Conference on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Kilgren began teaching for Howell Public Schools in 2002. She teaches several Family and Consumer Science (FCS) courses, including Teen Life, Life Skills, and Health and Wellness. These courses provide students with the resources and skills needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing. Additionally, FCS courses equip students with life skills such as health management and wellness, food science and nutrition, and personal and family finance.

"I was so surprised to learn that I was nominated for teacher of the year. Over the past 22 years, I have not only been the teacher in my classroom, but I have also been the student as I have learned so much from my students. I am truly honored to represent Howell Public Schools, Highlander Way, the Michigan FACS teachers, as well as, Western Michigan University, where I received both my Masters and Bachelor's degrees. I am proud to be a part of a school district where Family and Consumer Science classes are still being offered to its students," said Kilgren. "No teacher makes it in this profession alone. This award is not mine alone. The award goes to all of the people throughout the years that have helped me thrive. The Howell Public School staff is a phenomenal community of support for me. I want the community members here in Howell and all across the State of Michigan to know that Family Consumer Science Classes, formerly known as Home Economics, are even more important today than ever! I am a FACS teacher because "Adulting" is hard."

"We are so fortunate to have Amy as part of our team. She always goes above and beyond to find ways to engage our students and prepare them for the future," said Melanie Post, Highlander Way Middle School principal. "At Highlander Way, we know what an outstanding educator Amy is, and it is wonderful to see her recognized at the state level for all that she does."

In addition to being honored at the 2019 FCSEM Conference, Kilgren will also be recognized at an upcoming Howell Public Schools Board of Education meeting.
