Southeast Elementary Students Advance in Michigan History Day Competition

3/31/17 - Seven Southeast Elementary fifth grade students have qualified for the Michigan History Day state finals after claiming one of the top three spots in their category and age group at the Michigan History Day district competition held in Detroit on March 4. The state finals will be held Saturday, April 29 at Bay City Central High School.


The theme for this year’s competition was “Taking a Stand in History.” Working in three groups, the Southeast students selected topics relating to the competition theme, used both primary and secondary sources to learn about their topic and then wrote a thesis statement, process paper and included an annotated bibliography. The students also had to create a presentation to share with the judges. From Southeast, Sean Mitchell and Quinn Brennan created an exhibit titled, "Branch Rickey," Lauren Emrich and Sophia Mueller have an exhibit titled, "The Life of Frederick Douglass," and Althea Dennis, Natalie Dooley, and Olivia Dechy created a website titled, "Susan B. Anthony - The Woman Who Changed it All."


“I am very proud of our students who participated in the Michigan History Day competition. The students worked very hard during lunches, recess and after school to complete their research and projects,’ said Cheri Carroll, Southeast Elementary fifth grade teacher. “The students competed against fourth and fifth-grade students from three districts in Southeast Michigan.”


Southeast Elementary has participated in Michigan History Day for several years and often has students advance to the state competition.


About the Michigan History Day Competition

Michigan History Day, an affiliate of National History Day sponsored by the Historical Society of Michigan, is a year-long educational program where students in grades fourth through twelfth grade pick a historical topic related to an annual theme, conduct original research using primary and secondary sources, analyze their findings and draw conclusions about topics of significance in history and create final projects to showcase their work.  The projects, which include papers, documentaries, performances, exhibits and web sites, can be entered in a series of competitions from the local to the national level.
