MacGregor's Message 5/18/18

Dear Families

Each year we welcome several foreign exchange students to Howell High School. These students live with host families for the school year as they experience life and school in America. This program also benefits our students as it allows them to learn about various cultures and lifestyles from around the world. Our district partners with several organizations to facilitate our exchange student programs. There is always a need for additional host families. If you would like to become a host family or learn more about hosting an exchange student, please contact the high school main office at 517.540.8300, and they can connect you with one of our partner organizations.

In a recent update, I informed you about our middle and high school archery teams advancing to the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Championship. I am excited to share that our teams excelled at the national championship. Luke Lowery was named the Middle School Centershot National Reserve Champion in 3D and Grant Fyke was named the Middle School Centershot National Reserve Champion in Bullseye. Additionally, the Parker Middle School 3D team and Howell High School Bullseye and 3D Teams have qualified for NASP World Championship.

Today, Netflix released the second season of its popular series 13 Reasons Why. The first season was very popular with students and raised concerns for mental health professionals, parents, and educators due to the portrayal of issues such as suicide. This brings to light the importance of talking about student mental health and knowing the warning signs of depression and suicide. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has several resources available relating to this topic. On the NASP website, they offer Facts and Tips for parents to help prevent teen suicide as well as Tips for Teens to Prevent Suicide. Two great resources on this topic are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Oakland County Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force.

This week two of our elementary schools received grants from Tanger Outlets. This year, all of our eighth-grade students and high school students in personal finance classes took part in Financial Reality Fairs to learn about the importance of budgeting and being financially responsible. On Tuesday, it was announced that two of our high school students had been named the winners of the Livingston County United Way’s annual video contest. You can read more about each of these items below.

TangerKids Grants Awarded to Northwest and Three Fires Elementary Schools

This week, Northwest and Three Fires elementary schools were awarded TangerKids Grants. The grants are awarded annually by Tanger Outlets. At Northwest, a $2,000 grant will be used to support and expand the school’s FIRST Lego League program. At Three Fires, a $1,000 grant will be used to add comfortable seating options to the school’s media center. You can read more about the grants at https://goo.gl/zvjQq2.

Financial Reality Fairs Teach Students the Importance of Being Financially Responsible

Thanks to our partnership with LOC Federal Credit Union, we have been able to host three Financial Reality Fairs this year. All eighth-grade students, as well as students in the high school’s personal finance classes, participated in the events. At the Financial Reality Fair students visit multiple stations where they make lifestyle decisions while trying to stay within their budget. It was a tremendous real-life learning experience for our students. You can learn more about the  Financial Reality Fairs at https://goo.gl/6hHiWc.
