MacGregor's Message 5/4/18
Dear Families,

Today marked the end of another fantastic Senior Survivor. Throughout the week the survivors have participated in various challenges such eating snails, completing a driving course and a lip sync battle. This year’s Senior Survivor raised an incredible $88,127.59. The money raised will be split between LACASA and the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). FARA is a very special cause to our entire school community as one of the members of the Class of 2018 is affected by this rare disease. Katelin Bensman was named the winner of Senior Survivor for out raising all of the other survivors. You can read more about Senior Survivor at https://goo.gl/5DdfHL. There is also a video of the Senior Survivor Pep Assembly on our Facebook Page.

Last week we held the inaugural Highlander Warrior Awards. The Highlander Warrior Awards honored students who have overcome challenges and demonstrated perseverance, resilience and a strong work ethic along the way. Teachers from around the district nominated students they felt were deserving of this honor. It was truly an inspiring event.

May and June are always a busy time at Howell Public Schools. As the end of the school year approaches, there are concerts, award ceremonies and, of course, graduation. There are some important dates that I want to make sure you have on your calendar. Next Friday, May 11 is our final half day of the school year. On Tuesday, May 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. we will be hosting an informational workshop titled Vaping: 101, What’s Important to Know in the Parker Middle School commons. To learn more about the workshop, please visit https://goo.gl/x6ZHSQ. My last Coffee Chat of the school year is set for Thursday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Howell Chamber of Commerce. The Class of 2018 Graduation Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 2 at 5 p.m. at the Michigan State University Breslin Center. Lastly, please remember that we had to change the last day of school from Wednesday, June 13 to Thursday, June 14 to accommodate a makeup day of school, which was necessary as we exceeded our allowed number of inclement weather days.

Recently Northwest Elementary held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for two new water fountains it received thanks to a grant from Delta Dental and the hard work of its second-grade students. Our new middle and high school archery teams had an incredible first season and will be competing at a national tournament next week. On Tuesday, Howell High School celebrated the Class of 2018 and their postsecondary education plans during the second annual Decision Day event. You can read more about each of these below.

Northwest Elementary Receives New Water Fountains
Earlier this week, Northwest Elementary held a ribbon cutting for its two new water fountain/water bottle filling stations. The school received a Water’s Cool at School grant from Delta Dental to cover the costs of the fountains. To support the grant application, the school’s second-grade students researched the healthy aspects of drinking water and surveyed their classmates to see the level of support for the new drinking fountains. Using what they learned, the students wrote persuasive letters, which were sent with the grant application.

Howell Public Schools Archers Headed to National Tournament
We are always looking for ways to provide new opportunities to our students. This year, we added middle and high school archery clubs. In their first season competing, the Parker Middle School and Howell High School Archery teams were named the State Reserve Champions in 3D Challenge, which involves using 3D targets. Additionally, both middle school teams and the high school team have qualified and will be competing at the National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament next week.

Class of 2018 Decision Day
On Tuesday, Howell High School hosted its second annual Decision Day. Decision Day celebrated the Class of 2018 and their postsecondary education plans. The event featured a parade of seniors holding banners representing the college or university that they plan to attend after they graduate and an assembly with guest speakers attended by all Howell High School students as well as our eighth-grade students and fifth-grade students from Voyager and Challenger.
