MacGregor's Message 10/11/19

Dear Families,

Day in and day out, our fantastic building principals work tirelessly to ensure the best possible learning environment for our students. They are instructional leaders in their buildings and role models for students. The job of a principal is extremely challenging, which is why, during October, we celebrate National Principals Month. This is a time to recognize all that our principals do and ensure that they know how much we appreciate their dedication to our students, staff, and families. So, next time you see your child's principal, please take a moment to say "thank you" to them.

October is Make A Plan Month and Michigan College Month at Howell High School. During Make a Plan Month, the school encourages and supports its seniors to make a plan for after high school. Seniors are provided with several opportunities to explore career options, apply for college, and learn about financial aid. To celebrate Make A Plan Month and Michigan College Month, all Howell Public Schools students are invited to participate in a district-wide College Spirit Day on Friday, October 18, 2019. The goal is to spark conversations with students about their future career goals and post-secondary education options.

To help support literacy in Livingston County, a group of our teachers have helped co-found Livingston Kids Read. The goal of this group is to spread the joy of reading throughout the county by providing free books to children at various community events. They will be at the Legend of Sleepy Howell on Saturday, October 19, giving out free books to the children in attendance. To support this effort, they are taking donations to offset the cost of the books. To learn how you can support this effort, please visit http://bit.ly/2IDopbT. Another fun family-friendly Halloween event coming up is the Livingston County Public Safety Trunk or Treat. This free event will be held at the Livingston County Sheriff's Office on Friday, October 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event offers families the opportunity to meet many of our county's first responders. Hutchings Third Grade Students Solve Mystery

On Tuesday, the Hutchings Elementary third grade teachers kicked off the Mystery Unit of our new English Language Arts curriculum by having their students help solve a real mystery. For the lesson, Mrs. Buckingham's class pets went missing, and the third-grade students worked with a Deputy and Detective from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department to look for clues, collect evidence, and solve the mystery of the missing class pets.
