MacGregor's Message 5.31.19

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end. Tomorrow, the Howell High School Class of 2019 will officially become alumni as they walk across the stage at the Breslin Center. This year’s seniors were freshmen when I began my tenure with the district, and it has been so fun watching their journey as they have grown both personally and academically. I know these students will go on to do amazing things. The graduation ceremony begins at 5 p.m., with the doors to the Berlin Center opening at 4 p.m. Tickets are not needed, and all are welcome to attend. If you cannot attend but would like to watch the ceremony, we will be live streaming it at https://tinyurl.com/y2gq8p6m.

As we head into summer break, we have finalized the weekly route for our mobile library,  the Highlander Reading Express. We will be out every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday starting on Tuesday, June 11. We have added many new books based on student suggestions, and we are excited to hit the road again.  You can view the Highlander Reading Express’ weekly route and special event appearances by visiting HowellSchools.com/BookBus.

Once again, the Howell Carnegie Library will host its Summer Reading Challenge. The  Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage reading and keep students engaged all summer! There are programs that cover all ages from pre-readers through adults, and families can read together and complete Missions side-by-side. Research shows that when kids read over the summer, they are more likely to maintain or increase their academic skills. The Howell Carnegie Library Summer Reading Challenge begins June 1 with a kick-off event beginning at noon. Register then or anytime after at www.howelllibrary.org.

It has been a great spring sports season for our student-athletes. Our girls varsity softball team claimed the 2019 KLAA Championship and broke the state record for the most home runs in a season with 60. MaxPreps recently ranked Howell softball 25th nationally. Softball players AJ Millitello, Maddie Gillett, and Molly Carney are finalists for the Detroit Free Press Sports Awards Athlete of the Year. This week, MaxPreps named softball pitcher Molly Carney the National Prospect of the week, and recently Molly recorded her 500th career strikeout. AJ Millitello also recorded her 200th career hit this season.

Five of our girls track athletes (Ashlyn Tait, Alana Pietila, Ava Donnelly, Emily Endebrock and Amy Henderson) have qualified for the MHSAA state championship meet which will be held tomorrow. The girls 4x100 relay team (Ashlyn Tait, Alana Pietila, Ava Donnelly, and Emily Endebrock) broke the school record with a time of 4:01.54, and Ashlyn Tait broke the school record in the 800 m with a time of 2:15.82. Jack Johnson, a member of our hockey team, was recently named the Most Positive Hockey Athlete in the State of Michigan by positiveathlete.org. On the boys varsity baseball front, pitcher Luke Russo began the season by pitching back to back no-hitters in his first two starts. Yesterday, four Unified Champion Schools teams of students from Parker Middle School competed at the Special Olympics in Bocce Ball. Three of our teams (Evan Osland and Addison Caldwell, Anna Showalter and Harper Collins, and  Declan Faron and Mason Britt) all claimed gold medals and one team (Cole Reuter and Grace Flore) won a silver medal.

Recently, we finalized the open house and conference schedules with the Howell Education Association, and we have updated the 2019-2020 School Calendar with these dates. You can view the updated calendar at https://tinyurl.com/y5uqccc8.

Last week, Highlander Way Middle School seventh grade students saw the curriculum come to life as they recreated Medieval Europe. This year, two of our schools were selected to receive TangerKids grants from Tanger Outlets. It is not too late to register for summer athletic camps through the Howell Athletics Department. I’ve shared more on each of these items below.

With less than a week left before summer break begins, this will be the last MacGregor’s Message of the school year. As always, we will send out any important updates over the summer months, and MacGregor’s Message will return in the fall. I hope you have a fun and relaxing summer.

Highlander Way Students Recreate Medieval Europe

Last Friday, Highlander Way Middle School seventh grade students saw our curriculum come to life as they recreated Medieval Europe. The students used what they have learned about the Feudalism system in Social Studies as they participated in archery, stained glass recreations, “knight training,” jousting and dueling tournaments. The students also applied science lessons as they participated in a Bubonic Plague simulation, used trigonometry skills to determine the best way to fire a catapult at a target, and tested their English Language Arts skills to crack hidden medieval codes.

TangerKids Grants Support Two Schools

This year, two of our schools were selected to receive TangerKids Grants from Tanger Outlets. At Highlander Way Middle School, the grant will fund new drinking fountains with water bottle filling stations. At Three Fires Elementary, Mrs. Pressel was awarded a grant to support her Pedal Power initiative. We are very fortunate to have the continued support of Tanger Outlets.

Register Today for Howell Athletic Camps

There is still time to register for summer sports camps offered by the Howell Athletics Department. There are camps for all age groups in everything from football to swimming. To learn more about the camps being offered, or to register for one, please visit https://tinyurl.com/y65l86gb.
